Year 4 'Stomp' Day
On Monday this week, I had the pleasure of teaching in Year 4 for the day for their STOMP event. The children started the day by learning a song about Tony Chestnut. This was designed to warm-up their musical brains by getting their bodies to work in harmony with their voices! if you’re not sure what I’m on about, ask a Year 4 child and I’m sure they’d be happy to demonstrate for you!
We then moved on to a session using the Boomwhackers to play along to some songs that the children knew well (think guitar hero but with coloured tubes of varying lengths!). This was enjoyed very much by children and staff!
After break, we put together three different rhythms using body percussion as a year group – a tricky task that the children managed incredibly well.
In the afternoon, the children used our new class set of brooms to explore the different sounds they could make. Finally, the children used all of the different sounds explored throughout the day – with the addition of a ball and a bucket for good measure – to create their own piece of music, which they performed for the year group.
A marvellous time was had by all! When the children were asked what their favourite part of the day was, there was a resounding chorus – all of it! Two of our school's aims with our music curriculum aims are for every child to feel confident enough to have a go at composing their own music and for every child to enjoy music lessons; this was certainly the case in Year 4 this week.
