One of the landmarks of Tadworth is the windmill. This is situated in the garden of Millfield, but can clearly be seen from the paths on the common.
There are two mills on the site, both post mills. One was destroyed in 1890 and contained an inscription stating that it was built in 1799. It is thought that the remaining one dates from around the same time.
The mill was, back in the 1890s, worked by steam and in the early photos a tall chimney can be seen. Milling ceased in 1902 when the miller Mr E.W.Smith died.
The site of the original Tadworth Primary School was on the same side of the common as the Millfield windmill. The design of our emblem seemed an obvious choice as it was back in the day, the tallest local landmark that could be seen for miles around.
